Maxi madness
Monday, April 26th, 2010

Katie Chutzpah came along to our press day and was so impressed by the new Ingenue maxi dresses she decided to write about them. http://katiechutzpah.blogspot.com/

It’s the photograph that has inspired thousands of fashion collections: Patrick Lichfield’s image caught Talitha Getty on a Marrakech rooftop with her husband, John Paul Getty, at the beginning of 1969, when the couple were the very embodiment of  hippie-de-luxe glamour that has inspired every since.

Obviously it still has resonance.  It seems that hippie de luxe and the maxi dresses are everywhere for Summer which is great news. It’s taken so long for the sun to burst forth in the UK that suddenly millions of women are only just realising their need of leg waxing, fake tanning and pedicures. Maxi dresses are a catch all as they hide a multitude of sins including stubble (uugh!) and ultra white legs while looking cool to wear, feminine and actually, bar the city, are viable enough for a normal 9-5. They can be dressed up or down with a variety of accessories and are the one fail-safe day and night wear item required for a beach holiday. All in all, maxis have the thumbs up. So, I’m hearing a but…

Well, pregnant C lister, Danielle Lloyd, recently wore a white floral maxi with the hint of a newly acquired real tan from her short break in Dubai, but don’t let that put you off. Even she managed to look good in it. That’s the thing with maxi dresses. They kind of invoke mother earth – Part hippie child, part beach goddess with an air of feminine freedom. They also reek of holidays and lazy days and eccentricity and care free attitude. Short of giving you a personality transplant, these ’70’s inspired glamaxis just about tick all the boxes, unless, that is, you’re a CEO or high flying executive. I wouldn’t try being all Deborah Meaden or Julie Meyer in a maxi. The juxtaposition would just be too much even for a feisty assed female to pull off.

West London is the natural home of the glamaxi and Matches and Diana von Furstenburg (the obvious queen of loouche hippieism), both in Ledbury Road, have exactly the right selection.  DVF has rails of brilliantly coloured fuchsia, turquoise and bright green maxis (Zahari maxi £292) and, if you have money to burn, opt for Lanvin’s strapless silk version (£1575).float:right; margin:

New label, Chica and it’s sister diffusion line, Ingenue, have a myriad of maxis in vibrant colours to choose from starting from £99.99 (Pictured above).  However, if Notting or Primrose Hill isn’t your normal stomping ground or your budget is less than the price of a trustafarian’s hair cut, I urge you to look to the high street.

Oasis and New Look have a fabulous selection. Add a bit of personal style, ramp up the volume and you too can look like you’re au fait with Mustique and St Barts.  Add a drop of heavy, enigmatic 1970’s fragrance like Opium by YSL or Estee Lauder’s Cinnabar and you have it down to a tee.

Once the maxi is decided upon, the biggest decision is to pair with flops, flats or glitzy sandals? Now that is the question.

Chica and Ingenue ranges are available from chicaboutiqueonline.co.uk
New Look and Oasis stores are available through out the UK.

Exciting new talent
Monday, April 26th, 2010

When we first discovered Olivia Roat at the Designer Wedding Show we were struck by the originality of her hats – they are amazing and she is an exciting young talent to watch out for at only 27 years old.  So we were very excited when she called us last week to work together.  Her background is in sculpture and 3-d design and each hat is like a mini art piece.   She trained with Philip Treacy and uses traditional methods to hand-make all her pieces.  You can see her collection at the Maria Grachvogal shop on Sloane Street until end of May or book appointments at her Chelsea studio.

The Ups and Downs
Monday, April 19th, 2010

Ups: Wow, what a week we had last week so I am late writing our little review.  It was press day week which is always a huge deal and an enormous amount of work.  This year we decided to collaborate with Iroquois PR to help out the journalists and show even more gorgeous collections under one roof.  The plan was inspired and we had almost 100 editors turning up.   We held it right on Hanover Square which was strategically successful & it was a whirlwind of appointments, non-stop.  Phew – lots to follow up on.

Ups: Loving You Magazine.  Last Sunday they featured three of your clients.   A full page of the wardrobe mistress Julia Dee and her anti-moth munching natural products – www.totalwardrobecare.co.uk.   Orit’s must have necklaces by Shiri, www.oritlondon.com and lush, patent leather handbag by www.alisonvanderlande.co.uk

Ups:  Designer Alterations has just launched a new cashmere care service, which is super specialist and will return moth eaten, bobbly woolly favourites to their original shop bought glory.  Better to save than spend these days.

Origami eye-lashes … whatever next!
Thursday, April 15th, 2010

As ever, the fabulous Apartment-C is on top of the latest trend … First there was nail art, now there is paper origami eye lashes!

Snapped up by the uber clever Kenya Cretegny and as she rightly puts – “It is not often that we come an across and object of  such beautiful simplicity.  These delicate eyelashes are miniature works of art that seamlessly blend the the traditions of chinese papercutting with modern-edged cool. They took my breath away!”

They have been created by Chinese designer Chunwei Liao, from Paperself, who was inspired by the Chinese art of paper cutting, using traditional techniques and images and translated them into eyelashes.

There are three different style – and The meaning in Chinese for each pattern

1.horse — big success

2.peonies– wish you all the happiness in the world

3.    peach blossoms–bring the romantic encounter.

To clog or not?
Thursday, April 8th, 2010

What are y0ur thoughts on clogs?  I quite love them – see Katie Chutzpah’s take on the latest trend, and let us know your comments.

http://katiechutzpah.blogspot.com/

This season it seems we can’t pick up a magazine without being told to ‘clog it’. I’m not talking some strange skin aberration here, but the urge to slip on some wooden based high heeled slips-ons which make your toes grip to near death and cause frequent ’shoe flying off’ incidents. Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Jimmy Choo, Miu Miu and your usual suspect high street chains have done them so it must be right? Errr….the jury’s out on this one. The problem is, they look chunky so do absolutely nothing for fat ankles, coupled by the fact they make you waddle like a demented duck. Just try running for the bus in these sisters….it ain’t about to happen. Alexa Chung can swagger around in her Chanel clogs all she likes as she has swish private cars on tap. Unlike the rest of us fashion urbanproles.

Now here’s a little story for you….back in the day when Tom Ford was a mere twinkle in his mentor, Dawn Mello’s eye, Gucci was a house in need of a huge revamp and, with Mello as Executive VP and Creative Director, she went about breathing life into the brand with the support of Maurizio Gucci. Mello’s aim was to provide a clever combination of just the right balance of historical brand relevance and a real sense of modernity to Gucci to make it once again, a “must have” name. Mello, so it goes, had noticed a movement of young London hipsters wearing traditional Gucci loafers in an ironic fashion and, alongside Ford, who she brought to the brand in 1990, set about re-working the appeal of footwear, a staple to any brand.

By the early 1990’s, the Gucci clog was born and soon became a sell-out item among the fashion cognoscenti and the most copied shoe style of the season. Readers, I have those very clogs…two pairs. In pristine condition. So, before I go buying any of these new fangled upstarts of 2010, I may just revert to the originals.
