Interview with Nick Bartley, designer for jewellery brand Lucas Jack
Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

FA: You set up the label in 2006, how did it all start?

NB: I was working in an investment bank and after doing that for 7 years, I wanted to move into something more creative and have a complete career change.  I’ve had no formal training, although I do draw, so I took a year off, went travelling, and when I got back, I set up Lucas Jack.

FA: How does the design process work when developing your jewellery?

NB: It’s very much about trial and error.  I have great manufacturers over in China, so I’ll draw some pieces, send them out, and then head out there a few months later to see the product made.  From there I’ll work with them to tweak aspects of the design, the materials used and the finishing processes.

FA: Has the Lucas Jack aesthetic changed over the years?

NB: Yes absolutely.  In the beginning with did mainly silver pieces as this is what seemed to sell well, but we wanted to move into gold, so now we create lots of brushed and polished gold, as well as more colourful pieces.

FA: What are your best sellers?

NB: The rings do really well, and also our simple, gold cuffs.

FA: How would you describe the Lucas Jack style, and the core values of the brand?

NB: Fashion forward, minimalist and simple, with clean, graphic lines and a quality feel.  We wanted to make pieces that are to be worn, to be bought and, in a sense commercial, so good value is an important element to the brand.  I think our pieces have the right balance of luxe factor and affordability.

Lucas Jack is sold in approximately 250 UK stockists, including Fortnum and Mason, the V&A and Fenwicks, as well as in 30 different countries, both in Europe and worldwide.  For more information visit www.lucasjack.com

MLPR at Treasure for London Jewellery Week
Friday, June 11th, 2010

Always more than happy to add to our bulging jewellery collection, MLPR popped over to Treasure, the jewellery networking event and centrepiece exhibition for London Jewellery Week.  Showcasing both British and international designers, the space was packed with rows of glass cases, each holding glistening, polished bracelets, necklaces, gems and more.  Lots of black, glossy statement necklaces and creamy gold cuffs were on display, as well as the event’s first ever Ethical Jewellery Pavilion.

Sushi platters and jugs of ice cold Pimms kept the media crowd well oiled and a little goodie bag, complete with a free bottle of Fake Bake (which us pasty PR girls much appreciated), handed to us at the end, finished the night off perfectly.

Orit jewellery shop, Notting Hill, celebrating London Jewellery Week
Friday, June 11th, 2010

When we first glimpsed the Shiri cut-out necklaces at the Orit jewellery shop in Notting Hill, we knew they’d be a hit.  Having just got back from Treasure, the jewellery designers exhibition on in London this weekend, we spotted the trend. There were lots of fun and quirky images dangling from chains – from cars, cats, flowers and teapots and to rocking horses.  The shop is just around the corner from Notting Hill landmark, The Westbourne Pub, on Westbourne Park Willas.  You had better be quick if you want to snap up a Shiri charm necklace, as Easy Living Magazine has also just featured them!  Have a great weekend

MLPR at Orit’s shopping event!
Thursday, June 10th, 2010

The MLPR team got their purses out last night as we went along to the gorgeous Orit store in Notting Hill for their summer drinks party.  With 15% off on the night, a vertiable banquet of lip-smacking canapes and the bijous shop chocka block with press and customers, the tills were ringing and the champagne was flowing.

Doing their bit to keep Londoners kitted out in only the most stylish of accessories, Orit’s event kicked off the summer shopping season perfectly.  We can’t wait for another one!
